What is the difference between vodka and gin?

As the "conception spirit", vodka can be thought of as the base for gin. Both are fermented from grain, but while vodka remains a versatile spirit that can play well with numerous flavors, gin is infused with herbal botanicals, including a dominant juniper flavor.
